DMB was as good as ever.
The concert was amazing despite the absence of LeRoi Moore, with the two horn players burdened with filling his presence being solid and not lacking showmanship. Playing two saxes at once and screaming out the high notes on the trumpet got a rise from the audience, demonstrating Dave's power. Funny, sarcastic, and genuine, Dave remains as powerful as ever. Boyd Tinsley, on the other hand, would be a fine player in his own right, but he still sounds out of his league when flanked by Matthews, Beauford, and Reynolds. The music, light show, and energy of the crowd were all in sync and contagious.
At the DTE Energy Center, ticket prices were reasonable at almost $50 for lawn tickets incl. fees. However, a major drawback was the miles of unmoving traffic both entering and leaving the concert, causing us to miss not only the opening act but much of DMB as well. My advice is to aim for when they open the parking lot at 5:30 and tailgate. Also, search out alternate routes such as the long dirt road that is the back entrance.
